The Gore District Council needs to do better to win back the confidence of the community.

That s the message from Mayor Tracy Hicks following the results of a residents survey which shows confidence in the mayor and council is at its lowest point in five years.
The results were based on more than 600 individual responses collected by both telephone and online submission.
Out of those who responded, only 38 percent felt the mayor and councillors displayed sound and effective leadership. Only 35 percent felt the council had good strategies for developing prosperity and well being.
In an unexpected communication, EDS has been advised by the Chief Executive of New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Ltd (NZAS), Stewart Hamilton, that the company has made some fresh commitments to responsibly manage the waste products from its operations. .

The Government has today welcomed confirmation of waste remediation actions from Tiwai smelter owner Rio Tinto, including the removal of aluminium dross in Southland to the Tiwai site and paying the costs of doing so.
That also involves taking on the $4 million in funding commitments of the Government, councils and landowners in relation to the dross stored in the former paper mill in Mataura.
In a letter to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson, Energy Minister Megan Woods and Environment Minister David Parker, Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm said the company would make right its environmental performance at New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS).
