Consents granted for controversial Gore bridge

Blair Jackson19:47, Apr 29 2021 Supplied An artist impression of the $3.7million cable-stay design bridge as part of a $10.8million project to carry water pipelines from the East Gore plant to the Jacobstown wells. It will be the longest and tallest structure of this type in New Zealand at 39m high and 90m long. A controversial bridge across the Mataura River at Gore has been given the go-ahead, however appeals are still able to be lodged. The Gore District Council first announced plans for the bridge in mid-2020, and criticisms were aired about the bridge obstructing views, it being in a flood plain, effects on cultural values, ecology and privacy.

Billion dollar bill heading to Otago and Southland for Three Waters upgrades

Councils will soon have to decide whether they opt into Government water reforms or not. As well as the Essential Freshwater reforms, the Government is also pursuing the Three Waters reform to address a decades-long ageing critical infrastructure (stormwater, wastewater and sewerage). There are also new rules coming in for national drinking water standards. Clutha District mayor Bryan Cadogan said the lack of information coming from the Government about the reforms was “like playing a mystifying card game”. “We have to decide whether we’re giving away one-third of a billion dollars worth of assets that we have built and paid for to the Government to an entity that we’re not likely to have any say on – so what does that mean for democracy? ’

Cycle trail, toilets, carpark on council s tourism funding wishlist

”The toilets are old and grotty and we need to make sure that when tourists return they have a holistic experience. There s some pretty big ticket items there but any assistance that would take the financial burden off rate payers here, some of whom are really struggling at the moment, would be very welcome. “It might be quiet here now but we’ve got to take the positive approach that it s not going to be like this forever, and we need to think about that when planning infrastrusture,’’ he said. The council would hold a workshop on Wednesday where councillors would discuss the application to the fund.
