Fingers are being pointed at police minister Bheki Cele for failing, it is alleged, to sign off the budget to the police s 6,000-strong crime intelligence division ahead of the violence that followed the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma.
Cele is not the most attractive of characters, and blaming him for the subsequent intelligence failures might sit comfortably with many people. But Cele and the national police commissioner, Khehla Sitole, are barely on speaking terms, and while Sitole has about him a constant air of despair, Cele may not be the bad guy here.

It is all over then. As a political response to the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma, the insurrection of the past week is a failure. It achieved no obvious political goal and largely wrecked the economy of KwaZulu-Natal, at which the insurrectionists suckle.
The response to it was also a failure, mainly of crime and political intelligence and the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa himself.

As Jacob Zuma taunts our democracy and our constitution ahead of his inevitable arrest for contempt of court, you wonder what the actual moment of seizure will look like. All eyes should be on Bheki Cele, the police minister. Will he push through a protective mob to get his man?
I doubt it. Cele is a bully and bullies are only tough when the people they’re hurting can’t fight back.

Julius Malema and his Economic Freedom Fighters were on the streets of Pretoria on Friday protesting for the rapid approval by Sahpra of Chinese and Russian vaccines. The fact that the vaccines may not work that well, not against our B.1.351 variant, nor the (Indian) Delta variant coming our way, was beside the point.
