GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres appointed former Board of Education Chairwoman Janice A. Tenorio to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board of directors and former Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Melvin Faisao to the Northern Marianas Housing Corp. board of directors. Janice Tenorio The governor also renominated Tiana Hofschneider to the CNMI Scholarship Board of Directors to represent Tinian, saying he and Lt. Gov. Arnold Palacios “look forward to the Senate’s favorable action on Ms. Hofschneider’s nomination.” In his letter to Senate President Jude U. Hofschneider, the governor said he and the lt. governor are confident that Tenorio’s membership on an important board is critical to ensure consistency and continuity in fulfilling the goals and objectives of CUC.

Janet U. Maratita (IR-Saipan) and Sen. Ray A. Yumul (IR-Saipan) have amended their lawsuit against Northern Marianas’ Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, former attorney general Edward T. Buckingham, Commonwealth Utilities Corp. (CUC), and Saipan Development LLC (SDLLC) over an alleged illegal $190.8-million power purchase agreement deal. Attorney Ramon K. Quichocho, counsel for plaintiffs Senate, Maratita and Yumul, told Saipan Tribune yesterday that Gov. Benigno R. Fitia s recent public announcement that the controversial power purchase agreement is void is a step in the right direction.

Martinez SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, July 28, 2008) – The Senate on Friday passed its version of the House bill calling for the privatization of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. House Bill 16-77, House Substitute 1, House Draft 6, Senate Draft 1, otherwise known as the CUC Private Sector Partnership Act of 2008, now goes back to the House of Representatives. Six senators voted in favor of the bill. Three members were absent Floor Leader Jude U. Hofschneider, R-Tinian, Maria T. Pangelinan, D-Saipan, and Paterno S. Hocog, R-Rota.

MARIANAS UTILITY UNDER PRESSURE TO IMPROVE Submitted by admin on Mon, 03/23/2009 - 00:00 OPERATIONS Court orders environmental compliance SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, March 23, 2009) The U.S. District Court for the NMI has signed the stipulated orders requiring the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to improve and bring into compliance its wastewater plants and collection systems, public drinking water systems, five power plants and an oil transfer pipeline. It means the clock is ticking now and CUC has to meet certain deadlines, said Rep. Tina Sablan, chairwoman of the Saipan legislative delegation’s Public Utilities and Infrastructure Committee. There are penalties attached [to the stipulated orders], including monetary fines, she said in an interview on Friday.
