At least three people were killed and 27 were hospitalized when a boat overturned Sunday off the San Diego coast during a suspected human smuggling operation, authorities said.
San Diego fire officials and other agencies responded to a call Sunday morning that a commercial vessel looked to be in trouble, Fire Rescue lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero said in a news conference. Once we arrived on scene, the boat had been basically broken apart, he said, adding that the boat was determined to be a 40-foot cabin cruiser with multiple people on board.

SAN DIEGO Two people were killed and nearly two dozen others were hospitalized after a wooden boat capsized Sunday during a possible human smuggling operation just off the San Diego coast, authorities said.
Local lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies responded around 10:30 a.m. following reports of an overturned vessel near the peninsula of Point Loma, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Two people were killed and 23 others transported to hospitals after a vessel overturned Sunday off the coast of the U.S. city of San Diego, authorities said.
Multiple agencies including San Diego Lifeguards rescued 25 people from the water, said the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department on Twitter. Sadly, two did not survive. 23 were taken to local hospitals, the department tweeted, adding that U.S. federal agencies are still searching the water in vessels and aircraft.
The incident was reported near 200 Catalina Boulevard around 10:30 a.m. local time, U.S. media reported, citing the department.
The vessel overturned in the waters off Point Loma, a rugged peninsula known for the Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego s only National Park.
