Real person fanfic like Heat Waves is flourishing on AO3 and beyond

In early January, fanfiction website Archive Of Our Own experienced some temporary downtime. Rumor had it that it was caused by a single fanfic releasing a new chapter, one that had become so popular that the sudden influx of readers had overwhelmed the site’s servers. And though AO3 clarified that this was not the case, the idea didn’t come from nowhere. “It was like everyone was suddenly admitting to everyone else that they were reading and enjoying [real person fanfiction],” says Aenqa, a writer who asked to be referred to by their pen name. Every day on the internet, new micro-trends emerge, only to become old news five minutes later. In Polygon’s new series The Next Generation of Everything, we’re looking at what’s blowing up in the worlds and fandoms we follow, and what the latest shifts say about where Extremely Online life is going next.

Section 230: what changing it means for the internet

Section 230, which turned 25 years old this month, has played a central role in shaping the internet. Over the past year, Congress has introduced several proposals to change the law some of them drastic but the bills have often focused on a handful of very large tech companies like Facebook and Google. In reality, Section 230 has created a lot of the web as we know it. On Monday, March 1st, we’re holding an event on Section 230 and the future of tech regulation. After a keynote from Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), I’ll be sitting down with Wikimedia Foundation general counsel Amanda Keton, Vimeo general counsel Michael Cheah, and writer and strategist Sydette Harry to discuss how changing Section 230 could change the web. For a broader sense of its impact, however, I also spoke to a range of companies, nonprofits, legal experts, and others with a stake in preserving or reforming the law.

Liz Bourke Reviews Winter s Orbit by Everina Maxwell – Locus Online

Everina Maxwell’s Winter’s Orbit is a debut novel with an interesting history. A version of this novel was first published online, where I encountered (and enjoyed) it as “The Course of Honour” on Archive Of Our Own (in the Original Works category). Winter’s Orbit as published by Tor Books is different in some respects from “The Course of Honour”, most obviously in the more detailed attention paid to worldbuilding and the wider scope accorded the political situation, but the core narrative arc – the developing relationship between the protagonists – remains familiar. The Empire of Iskat rules over several planets. The greatest local power, it secures its treaties through marriage into the imperial family. Those treaties have more than local importance, because they are part of its agreement with the Resolution – a galaxy-spanning federation of powers that keeps other, larger, and more predatory empires from invading.
