Around Town: Laguna Beach places ban on single-use plastics on beaches, parks and trails

Print As part of the city’s Neighborhood and Environmental Protection Plan, Laguna Beach has adopted an ordinance that addresses plastic pollution. The ordinance, which took effect on Thursday, bans single-use plastic food ware items in the city’s beaches, parks and trails. The sale, use or distribution of single-use, to-go plastics such as straws, drink stirrers, eating utensils and take-out bags made from such material is also prohibited. The city urges local food and beverage vendors to use reusable materials when possible. Restaurants are asked not to provide non-plastic alternatives like paper straws unless a customer requests them. A food vendor may receive a one-year exemption from the ban on plastic food service ware if it can show that the conditions of the ordinance would cause undue hardship.

(Daily Trojan file photo) The USC men’s volleyball team lost its seventh match in a row this Thursday, falling to Concordia University in Irvine, Calif.. The  final set scores for the game were 23-25, 22-25, and 22-25.  CUI came out strong offensively against USC, setting the tone early with their first five points being kills. For the final two sets, the Trojans managed to keep themselves neck-and-neck with the eagles, but it was late-set attack errors that ultimately allowed their opponent to run ahead on the scoreboard.

The Golden West College nursing student is a bit later in the game than many of her peers. At 28, she already has a bachelor’s degree in biology from UCLA, but she went back to school for the opportunity to become a nurse. “I decided that maybe I want to be a little bit more interactive, spend more face time with patients,” said Huynh, who lives in Fountain Valley. “I love nursing. I can’t imagine doing anything else.” What no one could imagine was the effect the coronavirus would have on the country over the past 10 months. Since then, she has completed her Bachelor of Health Science’s Degree at California Baptist University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in the spring of 2020, not only with a health science degree, but also an Outstanding Student Award recognition. California Baptist University awards this outstanding student based on GPA, as well as involvement in the university and community and, as a Christian university, demonstrating Christ-like principles. Tucker received the award at the end of her tenure at university this past spring.
