CALUMET TOWNSHIP CLK Elementary School was named a National Showcase School by Capturing Kids’ Hearts earlier this month, according to a release from CLK Elementary School Assistant Principal Julie Giachino.
“This is quite the honor for our school,” said Elementary Principal Matt Hampton, “and is a testament to the incredible work our teachers and support staff have put in since we started this process in 2019.
“The Capturing Kids’ Hearts program has not only enhanced our relationships with students and families, but with colleagues, as well. One CLK Elementary staff member has stated it best as ‘We are capturing peoples’ hearts. ”
CALUMET, MI CLK Elementary School has been lauded as a National Showcase School for the 2020-2021 school year by the program Capturing Kids’ Hearts.
The program’s basic premise is educators need to put their students and relationships with them at the forefront of everything they do. That includes adults greeting all staff and students; classroom social contracts that define expected behaviors of how students treat each other and teachers and how to handle conflict; and lifting each other up through affirmations.
The Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium and Keweenaw have been working with the Flippen Group, the company running Capturing Kids’ Hearts, to become trauma informed. CLK has acquired three therapy dogs, started a Handle with Care Program with local police and had trauma specialists speak to staff about the effects of trauma.
