Tania Dominguez-Rangel ’21 has long been concerned with representation.
A DACAmented graduating senior born in Mexico City, Dominguez-Rangel grew up in the Atlanta suburb of Roswell, Georgia. While she had long been aware of public discourse around undocumented immigrants, the realization that few of the stories in the media were coming directly from the affected population came fairly recently.
In December 2019, the Undocumented Filmmakers Collective responded to a Netflix-backed documentary series, “Living Undocumented,” with an open letter. In it, the collective questioned the series production methodologies, noting that no undocumented filmmakers were part of the crew. “Our undocumented community does not need any more empathy through films created for mainstream American audiences,” they wrote. “What we need is genuine solidarity so that we can thrive by creating change from within our own communities and in our case, creating media about us, for us, by us. Cineuropa: When was the department established?
Andreas Treske (AT): The Department of Communication and Design of Bilkent University was founded in 1998. It was the first department of its kind in Turkey, so we were born under the growing influence of communication and design teaching of the late 1990s.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 20, 2021) For 15 to 20 years, artist Jeremy Colbert sculpted a successful career for himself in ceramics and metalworking. But it would take a series of visions, perchance dreams, to bring him to one subject matter of his work his heritage.
“I was very cautious on using Native American content in my artwork,” Colbert said. “… I was taking a nap. I woke up from that nap because I had a vision, and I literally got up, rolled over, drew something out on a little piece of paper that I could find. And on that piece of paper was this really beautiful looking totem sculpture that I dreamed about.”
