ESF Researchers Receive Grants from Northeastern States Research Cooperative
Awards Benefit the Northern Forest in 2021 5/11/2021
Northeastern States Research Cooperative (NSRC) Directors announced 13 grants totaling $1.6 million of federal funding and $0.8 million of matching funding for research that will address priority issues facing forest stakeholders in the Northern Forest region. The projects cover a broad range of concerns related to land use and sustainable forestry, rural communities and economic development, climate change, biodiversity, recreation and tourism, invasive pests and diseases, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
Federal funding comes from Congressional appropriations through a partnership with the research and development arm of the USDA Forest Service for research on the Northern Forest and its 26 million acres in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. MADISON, Wisconsin, April 8, 2021 (ENS) – “Invasive species have caused and will continue to cause enormous ecological and economic damage with ever-increasing world trade,” U.S. Forest Service scientists conclude in a new comprehensive assessment of the invasive species that confront America’s forests and grasslands, from new arrivals to some that invaded so long ago that people are surprised to learn they are invasive.
This open access report describes the serious threat of invasive species to native ecosystems. Led by Therese Poland, a research entomologist and project leader with the Northern Research Station, the assessment is the product of 115 authors from the Forest Service, other federal and state agencies, and land partners from the university, non-government organization and tribal communities.

The Federal LCA Commons is a major collaboration among many different agencies and disciplines. What are the short and long-term goals of this partnership?
EK: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a powerful tool to assess the total environmental impact of a product. Our short-term goal is to build a community of experts, share our expertise, and find new opportunities to collaborate to advance our collective LCA capacity.
PA: Through our community we identified goals to coordinate a federal approach to address climate change. Our long-term goal is to continue to build foundational datasets and knowledge management infrastructure to support the use of LCA in industry and public policy. Our mission is to provide products and services that are “below the value line,” which industry can use to meet environmental performance goals.

MADISON, Wis. Robert “Bob” Ross is one of few people who would know where to find thousands of pounds of rare high-quality wood. As the acting assistant director of research with Madison’s Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), he knew just what to do when the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) called him asking for some.
“It’s very beautiful wood and when you put a finish on it, it’s just going to be absolutely gorgeous,” Ross said.
