HERNANDO — At a press conference in The Villages on Feb. 1, Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed his optimism as the state of Florida has seen a decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations the past few weeks. The Florida Department of Health COVID-19 dashboard reports a total of 15,594 people have been vaccinated in Hernando County as of Feb. 3. As of the beginning of the month, DeSantis said nearly 30% of Florida’s 4.5 million seniors have been vaccinated. “If you look in Florida, the whole COVID situation, throughout the whole winter respiratory cycle, our per capita hospitalizations were significantly lower than California, New York, some of these other lockdown states,” DeSantis said. “What we’ve seen here, I think some of it’s seasonal, some of it is community immunity, maybe some of it’s vaccines; we’ve seen huge decline in hospitalizations over the last two weeks.”
