Letter: Cancel culture strikes in Superior
Why invite resentment by making assertions that stir the ire of others who may not agree when there is a non-offensive option?

Referencing the March 12 edition of the Telegram, it would appear that cancel culture has reached out community with the launching of discussion by the mayor s commision on communities of color to rename Moccasin Mike Road as introduced by Councilor Van Sickle ( Commission launches discussion to renamed road, Page A1).
The article states the reason for the discussion was the disturbance of the Indigenous burial ground on Wisconsin Point. This is a huge leap to conclude that the name Moccasin Mike incites people to engage in despicable acts such as this. Apparently, she believes that renaming the road will prevent future disturbances from recurring.

The Mayor’s Commission on Communities of Color in Superior launched discussion of a proposal to rename Moccasin Mike Road on Monday, March 8.
Councilor Jenny Van Sickle, a member of the commission, introduced the measure after the Winterfest Medallion Hunt was canceled this year when those searching for the prize disturbed the Indigenous burial ground on Wisconsin Point. The goal: to end the kind of mockery that leads to an absence of respect and knowledge for the people who originally settle Wisconsin Point.

Letter from Councilor Craig Sutherland to City Attorney Frog Prell
“I strongly believe we need some guidance on what to do moving forward,” Councilor Sutherland said.
In a letter to City Attorney Frog Prell, Sutherland worried votes by Van Sickle could inappropriately benefit Mayor Paine.
“There are conflicts of interest with immediate family members I’m concerned of where one can financially gain not only within their salary but within their health insurance package that the city offers,” said Sutherland. “I feel these lines are very blurred.”
