A NEW £100m college in Greenock has been added to the SNP candidate s wishlist of new investments for the area. Stuart McMillan has already declared that he wants a new health centre in Port Glasgow as well as a new hospital to replace Inverclyde Royal. On the education front, he wants more cash for a fresh further education facility. The Finnart Street campus is in urgent need of investment and locally the SNP is backing the college s bid for a new building in the East India Dock site. SNP council group leader Elizabeth Robertson and Councillor Chris Curley recently backed the proposal but as yet there has been no confirmation of funding and local elected members and campaigners point out that courses have moved to Paisley and Clydebank, while student numbers have fallen.
A BID to turn a major town centre building into a restaurant and shop complex has taken a big step forward. The new owners of Cathcart House, in Cathcart Square, have secured a provisional licence so that their future tenants can sell alcohol on the premises. Greenock based investment firm P&C Partnership want to lease out the building to businesses looking for a town centre trading location. At a licensing board meeting their representatives told members the venture would support the local economy and bring jobs to the area. Solicitor Peter Lawson, representing the firm, said: The owners believe this is an opportunity to boost economic activity, and with the current lockdown this is what we are all hoping for.
