Did Washington s Record Heat Death Toll Include Yakima Victims?

The numbers are in from around the Northwest and according to the Associated Press, Washington state’s death toll from last month’s record-breaking Pacific Northwest heat wave has risen to 78.  Oregon s death toll from last weekend s record-smashing heat wave has risen to 116. To give that some perspective, the state Department of Health said that in comparison, there were just seven heat-related deaths in Washington from mid-June to the end of August last year and from 2015 to 2020 there were a total of 39 deaths. Yesterday the state medical examiner from Oregon released an updated list of fatalities from the heat wave that added nine deaths. Of the 116 deaths recorded, the youngest victim was 37 and the oldest was 97.

YakTriNews.com March 15, 2021 7:12 PM Emily Goodell A 22-year-old man who went missing last week after a high-speed pursuit near Selah was found dead Sunday in the Naches River. Authorities had been searching for Chandler Radley since Wednesday, when a Washington State Patrol trooper saw him driving more than 90 miles per hour coming from South First Street onto State Route 823 toward the freeway. Trooper Chris Thorson said the trooper followed the car in an attempt to stop it, but didn’t catch up until the car struck a guardrail near Harlan Landing and came to a halt. “When the trooper is pulling up to the scene, he witnessed the driver get out of the vehicle, jump the guardrail, go down an embankment and then disappeared into the night,” Thorson said. “Our trooper didn’t chase after the suspect due to darkness and dangerous conditions.”
