NC State Extension Horticulture Specialist Mike Parker recently posted a nice video update on fruit trees in the home landscape for Extension’s Homegrown website. Mike reminds us that it’s definitely not too early to plan for new fruit trees, and that actual planting time is just around the corner.
Let’s get started with some basic reminders that will apply to all of our tree fruit crops. Mike stresses the importance of full sun, good drainage, and adequate space for the tree crop in question. Know where the utilities are before you start digging.
Remember that with the possible exception of figs, you’re not looking for any degree of harvest before the first three years in the ground. Instead, the priorities will be root growth and developing proper structure through appropriate pruning.
