PORTSMOUTH Since the COVID-19 vaccines became available, local health departments said they have been long prepared to distribute doses to Scioto County residents.
What now presents a considerable challenge to that effort Portsmouth City Health Commissioner Chris Smith says is low demand with vaccines available to all Ohioans above the age of 16.
Over the past month, Smith said a shift from high demand, low supply to low demand, high supply has transpired.
“When we went to do our big clinic for the week, right after Shawnee, it just dried up and didn’t have the demand at all,” he said Friday that first SSU clinic taking place April 1 where more than 400 received the Pfizer vaccine for the first time.

Westchester s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is improving by leaps and bounds County Executive George Latimer said Monday as the region is seeing a sustained slowing in the severity and spread of the coronavirus.
During a Monday afternoon briefing, Latimer lauded the latest COVID-19 numbers with active cases at 3,208 as of Saturday, a dramatic drop in the last week. He attributed the diminution of the disease to more residents receiving the vaccine, which is now open to every adult ages 16 and older in New York.
The improving pandemic situations in Rockland and Putnam counties are similar to Westchester s. We had seven weeks of decrease, we had two, 2½ weeks where things were kind of static and now they ve been decreasing over the last week and we re very encouraged by that, Latimer said of Westchester.
