Ceremony – weddings, christenings, funerals, coronations – is what the British royals do best in public, and with roughly 10 centuries worth of experience, it s no wonder. Now we re about to see how they do a major funeral during a pandemic, when Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, is laid to rest on Saturday.
The royal ceremonial funeral for Queen Elizabeth II s husband of 73 years, who died April 9 at Windsor Castle at age 99, will combine antique tradition, the restraints of the coronavirus pandemic, the transcendence of the Church of England funeral rite and the idiosyncratic no fuss personality of the Iron Duke himself.

LONDON (AP) - Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and the oldest living descendant of the late Queen Victoria of Britain will have a royal ceremonial funeral that will take place April 17 at Windsor Castle a slimmed-down service amid the COVID-19 pandemic that will be entirely closed to the public.
To deter crowds from gathering during the pandemic, the entire procession and funeral will take place within the grounds of the castle, a 950-year-old royal residence 20 miles west of London. It will be shown live on television and streamed in its entirety on NewsNOW from FOX.

The region will fall silent today as the nation remembers the Duke of Edinburgh.
From his beloved Sandringham where Prince Philip spent most of his final years to all four corners of the county, people will pause for a minute s reflection at 3pm before his funeral gets under way in St George s Chapel, at Windsor Castle.
There will be no grand state parades down the Mall in London or through the streets of Windsor because of Covid-19. There will be just 30 mourners in the towering chapel, instead of the 800 who were due to be invited before the pandemic and the entire event will take part within the castle walls.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s “unwavering loyalty” to the Queen and his “courage, fortitude and faith” will be marked at his funeral.
After 73 years of marriage, the Queen will say farewell to Philip during a televised funeral service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on Saturday, attended by a small group of close family and friends.
Covid regulations have reduced the scope of the service with public elements cancelled, mourners reduced from around 800 to just 30, and all guests wearing face masks and sitting apart.
A touching photograph of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh giving a glimpse of their lives away from protocol and ceremony was released on the eve of Philip’s funeral.
