Labor shortage slows Gaston County road project Workers are wrapping up a long-awaited road widening project in Mount Holly after four years of construction.  July 2017 marked the beginning of the widening of a 1.3-mile stretch N.C. 273 between Tuckaseege Road and A&E Drive. The project, which was designed to increase vehicle capacity and efficiency for local and regional traffic, includes a four-lane divided highway with turning lanes built into the median.  Four years later, most of the work has been completed. But a shortage of workers – which has especially hit the service industry – has also made its mark on the highway in the final days of work, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
