Lisa Walker filmed this driver travelling on the wrong side of the road on Dyers Pass Rd in February 2021. Initially 1km of guardrails were planned to be installed. The work was included in NZTA’s Safer Networks Program, with contractor Higgins Constructions working on behalf of the council. The council’s acting head of transport, Lynette Ellis, said the additional shoulder width was expected to “improve everyone’s safety and reduce conflict between road users”. The steep terrain of the road meant crashes often resulted in severe injuries, which the guardrails aimed to reduce, she said.
