Nearly 6,000 Avista customers without power in Spokane

KXLY June 28, 2021 2:01 PM Erin Robinson Updated: SPOKANE, Wash. Nearly 6,000 Avista customers are without power in Spokane. According to the Avista outage map, the outage is affecting people in the Nevada/Lidgerwood neighborhood, residents in the Country Homes area and homes along Government Way between Palisades Park and Spokane Falls Community College. A separate outage is now also affecting people in the High Drive, Eagle Ridge and Thorpe Road areas. At its peak, roughly 8,250 people were without power, partially caused by unplanned outages from Avista to spare the electric grid. The first outage was reported at 1:45 p.m. and all are set to be restored by 6 p.m, just as some of the hottest temperatures of the day are expected to hit.

As of Monday afternoon, people had lost power in north Spokane, west Spokane and the Eagle Ridge neighborhood. “Due to the extreme heat and significant increase in electric usage, some Avista customers are experiencing temporary unplanned power outages to alleviate the strain on the electric system,” Avista wrote on its website. “As a state and federally regulated utility, Avista is required to reduce electric load on the system when certain system thresholds are met. In certain areas, these thresholds have been met rather quickly, and to meet the requirement, power has been turned off temporarily. In
