The challenges of herbicide-resistant grass weeds

Wild oats have developed resistance to a number of different herbicide actives in some fields. Figure 3: Control levels in resistant (R1 to R4) populations of Italian ryegrass to ACCase Stratos Ultra, Falcon and Axial Pro and ALS Broadway Star and Pacifica® Plus, all applied at recommended label rates. Previous Next Problem grass weeds such as wild oats, sterile brome, Italian ryegrass and blackgrass are increasing in tillage fields. They are very competitive, can cause yield losses of over 80% and can explode in numbers if left uncontrolled. Weed control generally involves a combination of herbicide and cultural tools. The ACCase (Group A) and ALS (Group B) herbicides are most commonly used for selective grass weed control (Table 1).

Tillage Management: hopefully we will be back to sowing again shortly

Hopefully we will see drills back out on fields again shortly. No spring yet: The past week put a halt to field work with between 1in and 2in of rain across the main tillage areas. Soil temperatures have begun to creep back up and are now generally between 8°C and 9°C across most of the country. This will help the crops that were sown in recent weeks and help to drive growth in winter cereals. Beans: Demand for bean seed is reported to be slow in parts of the country. There is still time to get this crop sown but it would be best done in the next week or two. If we do not keep good rotations going, our cereal yields will slip even further.
