Unfortunate failure of rehabilitation : 22-year-old Weed man sentenced to 11 years in prison

Unfortunate failure of rehabilitation : 22-year-old Weed man sentenced to 11 years in prison Siskiyou Daily News A 22-year-old Weed man that committed increasingly disruptive crimes and failed to abide by terms of probation was sentenced Tuesday to 11 years in state prison. Cavonte Amaru Gary Shumlia was sentenced on 19 separate charges – including a September 2020 pursuit that reached 120 miles per hour – and probation violations from two previous cases, said Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus. “We never want to send a person this young to prison unless they effectively close off all other avenues,” Andrus said of the case, which he called an unfortunate failure of rehabilitation.

Weed Community Christmas Baskets have been tradition since 1970s

Mount Shasta Herald As they have done every holiday season since the late 1970s, volunteers from the Weed community came together last week to coordinate the giving away of 150 boxes, loaded with a turkey and all the fixings for a traditional holiday dinner. The Weed Community Christmas Basket program involved the help of about 15 volunteers this year and donations from different local businesses. Thirty of this year’s 150 boxes were delivered to homebound seniors. Although usually people come inside to pick up their boxes, this year, the giveaway was done in a drive through fashion, said volunteer Roxann Anzo, to limit contact during the pandemic. Anzo has been volunteering for the event for 26 years, since she first began working at the Weed Police Department.

Here s where you can make last minute donations to Siskiyou Toys for Tots

The community has come through in a big way for Siskiyou County Toys for Tots.  On Dec 3, Dawn Maidl, who coordinates the program with her husband Ken, said donations were down. She worried that the pandemic would stop people from donating, and that more kids than ever were in need of Christmas gifts. She said at the time that she had faith the community would come through.  Her faith has paid off.  On Friday, Maidl reported Toys for Tots has been inundated with donations – hopefully enough for all the 2,000 Siskiyou County kids and their families who requested them this year.
