On top of her team lighting the lamp against conference foe Robert Morris, there was something extra for her to celebrate.  Her linemate Hannah Johnson had just scored her first collegiate goal. Johnson collected a pass from Tatum White at the blue line before firing a wrist shot through traffic in the Colonials’ crease and in the net. A memorable milestone in Johnson’s career also marked an impressive achievement for the Orange’s freshman class.

Syracuse led an ordinary rush into the Mercyhurst zone with the game tied at one and less than 90 seconds to play. With the puck wrapped around the boards and the Orange ready to regroup in the offensive zone, the whistle blew, and Emma Polaski was headed to the penalty box on a questionable cross-checking call, where she fell onto Mercyhurst goaltender Ena Nystrøm and knocked her down into her own end.

Syracuse beat RIT 3-0 on Wednesday, winning its second game against the Tigers this season and playing its first game since its Jan. 23 loss to Robert Morris. Syracuse ice hockey’s weekend series against Mercyhurst, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, has been postponed to a later date due to COVID-19 protocol within the Lakers’ program. The dates of the postponed series will be announced once they’re confirmed, according to a statement from SU Athletics. The Orange were originally set to travel to Erie, Pennsylvania for the two-game series.  This is the second time in January that a weekend series for Syracuse (2-6-1, 2-4-1 College Hockey America) has been postponed due to an opponent’s COVID-19 protocol. SU’s first series of 2021, scheduled for Jan. 15 and 16 against Lindenwood, was also postponed days prior to the games.

Looking down the ice for an option, she skated gingerly behind her own net before being swarmed by three Robert Morris skaters who anticipated her move up the right side of the boards. The Colonials’ Maggy Burbidge left the scrum with the puck, taking it into the corner before dishing it in the direction of Ellie Marcovsky. The rolling puck came to Marcovsky, who was surrounded by two Syracuse defenders. She managed to pull off a wrist shot that slid under Orange netminder Allison Small’s pad to give Robert Morris the game winner 34 seconds after Syracuse’s 1-1 equalizer.
