As soon as results appeared on election night, the outcome of the Democratic mayoral primary was never really in doubt. Nanes consistently held a lead over his opponent Jim Leous, a longtime member of the State College Area School Board.
According to Centre Countyâs unofficial results, Nanes currently holds 66.5% of votes with 1,690 ballots, whereas Leous holds the other 33.5% with 851 votes. The results are set to be certified in early June.
âIt feels incredible. Itâs a really amazing, uplifting experience to win,â Nanes said. âWeâre just really thankful to the community for joining with us in this vision.â
State College mayoral candidate Ezra Nanes released a statement Wednesday night declaring victory in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.
Although vote counts remain unofficial, Nanes has, so far, amassed 1,568 votes (65.8%), giving him a nearly two-to-one margin over Jim Leous, who also ran in the Democratic primary. Nanes said he is deeply honored by his apparent victory and the confidence of voters.
“Our community spoke with resounding clarity and unity of purpose to affirm the most fundamental part of our vision that all people be loved, valued and respected for who they are, be protected, have access to representation and to the resources of our community and that every person has the same right of self-determination afforded to each of us,” Nanes said in a statement.
Amid ongoing vote counting, Democrat Ezra Nanes, director of business development in account management at AccuWeather, declared victory in the primary election for the State College mayoral position in a statement Wednesday night, saying he is deeply honored.
With 26.09% of Centre County turning out to vote and roughly 2,000 votes yet to be counted, Nanes has received 1,568 votes, compared to Democrat Jim Leous s 815 votes, according to the latest election data update Tuesday night. This equates to 65.8% of votes for Nanes and 34.5% for Leous.
Leous, who is finishing his third term on the State College Area School Board, called Nanes Tuesday night to offer congratulations and support, according to the statement.
Ezra Nanes appears to be on his way to becoming the next mayor of State College.
Though the election results are not yet final, Nanes has a nearly two-to-one majority over Jim Leous in the Democratic primary election, with 1,568 votes (65.8%) to Leous’s 815 (34.2%). According to the elections office, about 2,000 mail ballots countywide are still to be reported.
Nanes issued a statement on Wednesday night declaring victory.
“I am deeply honored to have the support and confidence of the voters of the Borough of State College,” he said. “… Our community spoke with resounding clarity and unity of purpose to affirm the most fundamental part of our vision that all people be loved, valued and respected for who they are, be protected, have access to representation and to the resources of our community and that every person has the same right of self-determination accorded to each of us.”
Centre County announced its unofficial primary election results prior to certification for the mayoral, borough council and school board positions in State College as of Thursday morning.
Democratic mayoral candidate Ezra Nanes claimed victory Wednesday night over his opponent, Democrat Jim Leous, who conceded the race to Nanes that evening.
Nanes said in a statement he was âdeeply honoredâ to have won the support of State College community members and thanked Leous, saying he âserved [the] community honorably.â Nanes said he looks forward to working with the members of borough council on various initiatives.
With no current Republican opponent for the general election race in November, Nanes will likely succeed current interim mayor Ron Filippelli, a candidate for borough council.
