A charter school network looking to move its high school from Avondale to Albany Park has ignited controversy between the charter network and surrounding schools in Albany Park.
ASPIRA Early College High School has proposed a move beginning in the fall from 3986 W. Barry Ave. to 3729 W. Leland Ave., blocks from Theodore Roosevelt High School, 3436 W. Wilson Ave. This move would place the charter school in the same building as its feeder school, ASPIRA Haugan Middle School.
ASPIRA CEO Fernando E. Grillo said students initiated the move two years ago, telling administrators the facility could no longer accommodate their needs. ASPIRA applied to relocate the high school in February and is waiting on a decision from the Chicago Public Schools Board.

A workforce development center being renovated behind Jackson Central-Merry Early College High will have seven programs available for all Jackson-Madison County School System high schools, house the renowned Local Options and Opportunities Program (LOOP) and offer more than one path to students goals, according to career and technical education director and JCM-ECH principal Nathan Lewis.
Each umbrella area – health sciences, welding and advanced manufacturing – will have a classroom with a lab adjacent to it for students to immediately transition to hands-on activities to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom.
Under health science, there are four programs: Diagnostic Services, Nursing Services, Sport and Human Performance and Therapeutic Services. Advanced manufacturing includes mechatronics and machining, and welding is its own program.
Austin school district students can now opt to not wear a mask while social distancing and can participate in end-of-year ceremonies as long as they re outdoors, the school district announced Wednesday.
The district is easing COVID-19 protocols beginning Wednesday because rising vaccination rates and precautions such as masking and social distancing have resulted in low COVID-19 infection rates, Alexandra Copeland, the district health director said in an email.
The district will no longer require masks during outdoor activities, such as recess, so long as social distancing, now a minimum of 3 feet for students, can be maintained.
Parents or guardians must fill out consent forms for their children to unmask outdoors. Consent forms will be sent electronically by schools and made available at campuses, the district said.
