Austin school district students can now opt to not wear a mask while social distancing and can participate in end-of-year ceremonies as long as they re outdoors, the school district announced Wednesday.
The district is easing COVID-19 protocols beginning Wednesday because rising vaccination rates and precautions such as masking and social distancing have resulted in low COVID-19 infection rates, Alexandra Copeland, the district health director said in an email.
The district will no longer require masks during outdoor activities, such as recess, so long as social distancing, now a minimum of 3 feet for students, can be maintained.
Parents or guardians must fill out consent forms for their children to unmask outdoors. Consent forms will be sent electronically by schools and made available at campuses, the district said.
