A former Gainesville fire station soon could become a community cultural arts center.
The project, a collaboration between the University of Florida and city of Gainesville, could push out the many homeless people who have been pitching tents outside Old Fire Station No. 1 at 427 S. Main St., which is next door to St. Francis House.
Gainesville and UF officials say the center is just what the neighborhood needs.
City Commissioners endorsed the concept of the arts center last week, instructing City Manager Lee Feldman to come back with cost estimates for renovating the building, including the cost of bringing it up to code.

Narges Firouzshahi is the University of Louisiana at Lafayette s overall Outstanding Master s Graduate.
She was among six finalists for the award. Each will be recognized at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, during a Spring 2021 Commencement ceremony for the Graduate School at the Cajundome.

An internationally renowned designer of water features will receive an honorary doctorate of arts from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during Spring 2021 Commencement ceremonies.
James A. âJimâ Garland, an expert in water design, architecture and urbanism, founded Fluidity Design Consultants Inc., a Los Angeles-based water feature design and engineering firm. He earned a bachelorâs degree in architecture from the University in 1982. He also graduated from UCLAâs Master of Architecture degree program.
UL Lafayette will award Garland an honorary doctorate Friday during the College of the Artsâ Commencement. The ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. at the Cajundome Convention Center.
