A new city report in response to an inquiry filed by Coun. Sean Chu and Coun. Jeromy Farkas shows that over the last four years, the city has paid out an average total of $30.1 million in overtime. Last year was below the average, at $28.9 million. Additionally, the four-year average for overtime payments to Calgary Police Service employees came to $13.6 million.

City chief financial officer Carla Male wrote that overtime payments were down 11 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019, and there were also fewer employees getting those payments. The total annual payments to city and police employees add up to a little more than two per cent of salary expenditures and just one per cent of annual city costs.

But Marilyn North Peigan said the gesture comes late, after recommendations of the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission report have been long ignored.

“This should have been done in 2015,” said North Peigan, a community reconciliation liaison who’s also running for Ward 7 councillor in the upcoming Calgary civic election.
“This is an acknowledgment.”
Late last week, the Calgary Catholic Diocese posted an online statement saying it was prepared to make a financial contribution toward “the ongoing work of justice and healing in our country with the Indigenous Peoples and their communities.”
