Cal Poly Rose Float Program collaborates on art installation in Downtown SLO

Since December, Mission Plaza in Downtown San Luis Obispo has been hosting Plaza Pop-Up art installations.
For this month, a collaboration between the city of San Luis Obispo, Downtown SLO, Karson Butler events, as well as the Cal Poly Rose Float Program, brings art that celebrates spring and rejuvenation.
The Rose Float Program was commissioned for a three-week installation, where they will show the process behind building one of their famous designs.
âFor the first week, weâre showing off our construction team: we have our mechanisms and we have our structural elements. The second week weâre showing off our design, our more intricate metal working as well as some of the paint work done. Cal Poly students took the spotlight Friday morning in a national TV special by the Tournament of Roses in place of the annual New Year s Day parade.
The Cal Poly Rose Float Program has been a tradition for 73 years.
Sixty students from the Cal Poly campuses in San Luis Obispo and Pomona teamed up in January 2020 to create a spectacular float.
Friday morning audiences learned about the yearlong student-run process of designing, building and decorating the float. San Luis Obispo takes their piece, loads it on a truck and it takes about four hours to drive it all the way down to Pomona. Then, once it arrives in Pomona, the big moment comes where San Luis Obispo s half and Pomona s half come together. It s a very nerve-racking process because we don t know if either of them are going to fit, explained one student in the special.
