Art Squared saw a crowd of visitors during its monthly event on the Hays County Historic Courthouse lawn on Saturday. The Art Squared Arts Market features arts and fine crafts from local artists. The event takes place every second Saturday of the month from March through December.

Voting begins for Art League design contest with cash prizes Sun, 03/07/2021 - 5:00am

The San Marcos Art League hosted a graphic design contest throughout the beginning months of 2021, and the deadline for entries closed on March 1. Now is the time where the Art League asks San Marcos community members to vote on their favorite design, where the winner will have their design showcased on the 2021 Art Squared tote bags as well as a $100 cash prize. Second and third runner-up designs will receive a $75 cash prize and a $50 cash prize.

Were it not for Big Car Collaborative’s track record, their plans for the Garfield Park area might sound a tad grandiose. Maybe even nuts.
Until recently, the near-southside neighborhood was known almost as much for its abandoned buildings as the green space for which it is named. Crime rates were high and rents were low. But Jim Walker and his wife Shauta Marsh, cofounders of Big Car, saw potential in the place. And where the leaders of that community arts group see promise, good things usually happen. The Price Center’s San Mercado is happening twice this month for extra local and shop small opportunities for the Holidays. The monthly markets will run from 9 a.m. 2 p.m., this Saturday Dec. 12 and again on Sat. Dec. 19 in conjunction with the San Marcos Farmers Market (9-1) and the San Marco Art League’s Art Squared (9-4). San Mercado features Popup vendors, SHOP 1893, fresh art shows, live musical entertainment, and COVID-safe precautions, including required mask-wearing by all vendors and shoppers, outdoor and indoor vendors spaced safely apart with plenty of fresh air flowing through the facility.
