La Grande seeks next public art sculpture

The La Grande Arts Commission on Saturday, April 11, announced the call for proposals. The selection commission, according to the request, is especially interested in submissions that “consider the values of the communities that make up La Grande, are multicultural, interactive and engaging. … We’re looking for an innovative and creative design that speaks to the cultural identity of La Grande and honors its heritage through a cohesive use of materials and visual language. The artwork should reflect the theme, ‘Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present; Embracing the Future.’” Stu Spence, director of La Grande Parks & Recreation, explained the arts commission for several years has held what it calls “creative conversations” with members of the art community in Northeast Oregon, except for in 2020, due to the pandemic.

La Grande poet Ryan Scariano reads next week

LA GRANDE — Art Center East, La Grande, is hosting an online reading with local poet Ryan Scariano at the next virtual ACE Writing Project gathering, Wednesday, March 17, at 7 p.m. Scariano is the author of two poetry collections, “Smithereens” and “Not Your Happy Dance.” He lives in La Grande and works at Eastern Oregon University. Paulann Petersen, Oregon poet laureate emerita, said, “In the infectious music of Scariano’s poems, a lilac has ‘loamy eyes’; sugar ants are ‘little seasonal keystrokes’; vinegar can ‘inhale summer’s glow / and exhale that long amber breath.’” The reading will conclude with a community open mic. The moderator will take sign-ups beginning at 6:45 p.m. on a first-come basis (maximum 10 readers, each with a 5-minute reading limit).

True whaling story is at the heart of Big Read

ENTERPRISE — Fishtrap’s Big Read 2021, which is online-only again this year, is a true tale of resilience and survival — In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick. The month-long event kicked off this week. The National Book Award-winning tale is the story of the whaleship Essex which, in 1820, was the target of a sperm whale attack. The 85-foot long whale — perhaps the largest of that species anyone had witnessed — rammed the ship and stove it in. The attack and the sinking of the Essex were the basis of Herman Melville’s ending for his 1851 novel, Moby-Dick.
