The state’s fund for highway repairs is taking a big hit. Officials report a projected $6 billion annual deficit is due to a number of factors that led to lower fuel consumption. The pandemic upended the economy leading to higher unemployment, more remote work, and fewer car trips. Part of the state’s highway fund comes from gas taxes, which are the highest in the country. However, with fewer fill-ups, the money to fund transportation-related projects is far less than expected. State leaders are hoping the federal infrastructure bill becomes law. If so, California could see around $10 billion for freeways, roads, and bridges.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) encourages residents to practice responsible driving and traffic safety this Super Bowl weekend as fans prepare for socially-distant viewings.
CHP officials advise that in the case of travel, residents should adhere to important and responsible safety regulations such as driving sober, avoiding distractions, wearing a seatbelt and not speeding.
“The Super Bowl is one of the most celebrated sporting events of the year, and I am encouraging Californians to celebrate responsibly,” CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said. “If you choose to drink, do not get behind the wheel. Designate a sober driver.”
In addition to their advisories, CHP officials are expected to be on high alert for impaired drivers over the weekend. An arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) can include alcohol, cannabis, prescription drug, and illegal drug use.
