LOS ANGELES (KABC) A major effort is underway to help local art and cultural institutions that have been hit hard by the pandemic. The new L.A. Arts Recovery Fund hopes to provide some much needed support.
Art, from performance to the visual, is said to be food for the soul. But since the pandemic, museums, art galleries and theaters have shuttered. This has devastated the sector and so we ve heard from hundreds of organizations. We also know artists and others, creative workers they employ really looking for relief and ways to get to recovery, said Kristin Sakoda, Director, LA County Department of Arts & Culture.
Funders Unite to Support Los Angeles Arts Nonprofits

A group of funders led by the J. Paul Getty Trust have banded together to support small- and medium-sized arts organizations. Under the heading The LA Arts Recover Fund, a dozen initial funders have raised $38.5 million. The fund’s grants will provide a minimum of two years’ operating support to Los Angeles County arts organizations that had annual operating budgets of less than $10 million prior to March 2020.
The fund is administered by the California Community Foundation. In addition to financial resources, the fund will aid organizations’ efforts in gaining capacity-building support and technical assistance. The fund is open and the administrators hope to increase it to $50 million. As part of the fund, the Ford Foundation issued a challenge grant aimed at supporting Asian, Black, Indigenous and Latinx arts organizations.

Since The We Are Santa Monica Fund was created in spring 2020, more than $1.1 million has been donated to the cause; and now, city leaders must determine how to equitably allocate the funding in the future.
The We Are Santa Monica Fund was originally started to help residents, businesses and local organizations respond to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund is administered through the California Community Foundation, and donations support COVID-19 Relief for local residents facing housing and food insecurity, business recovery efforts, the recently passed Black Agenda, and the Food Pantry at Virginia Avenue Park.
