Long Beach City College in California in 2019 provided hot breakfasts for about 1,800 students across 10 separate events. This past fall, on Nov. 24, the college provided a food pickup service to about 390 students (helping about 1,820 household members total) in one day.
San Antonio College, part of the Alamo Colleges District in Texas, provided nearly 89,000 pounds of food for 633 students (getting food for a total of 3,455 individuals) from September through December in 2020.
Calhoun Community College in Alabama disbursed 26 emergency grants from March through September 2020, more than twice the amount they usually disbursed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
LA county is “moving away from a system of punishment to one of prevention, mental health resources, and youth development,” the philanthropic leaders wrote. This ongoing transformation “now comes to a critical juncture the selection of the next Los Angeles County Chief Probation Officer.”
With all this in mind, on the surface it was a surprise that the board chose someone with Gonzales’ background that, other than his five year stint at San Diego Probation, has been primarily focused on the world of policing. After starting in the police reserves, he became a full time officer for San Diego Police Department in 1979, rising through the department ranks to the rank of assistant chief of police in 2001. In 2004, Gonzales became the Chief of Police for National City, then was the appointed as the Chief Investigator for the San Diego District Attorney’s Office in 2013.

SANTA MONICA On Tuesday, December 15, the Santa Monica City Council unanimously voted to allocate $10,000 from their Discretionary Fund and committed to match another $10,000 from the community through December 31 to support the holiday food pantry at Virginia Avenue Park.
The generous donations are an effort to recognize the Santa Monica’s front-line workers and their dedicated service to the community during the pandemic. The pandemic has impacted businesses and families alike, so any donation a Santa Monica resident contributes will go directly to We Are Santa Monica fund.
In partnership with the California Community Foundation (CCF) and the city of Santa Monica, the We Are Santa Monica Fund was created to provide relief for businesses, to advance racial equality for the residents of color in Santa Monica, and to serve food for families in need during Covid-19. The Virginia Avenue Park food pantry is categorized under serving families in the community.
