Caloundra locals can have their say on plans to repurpose the existing Caloundra watchhouse to a new, short-term youth remand centre.
Youth Justice Minister Leanne Linard said plans to repurpose the building, which is an operational watchhouse and can currently hold adults and young people who have been arrested by police, needed to be part of a community discussion to ensure everyone knew the facts.
“Since it was open, the watchhouse has been able to accommodate both adults and young people who have come to the attention of police,” Ms Linard said.

A viewing platform, boardwalk and access ramps will be lifted into place by a 120-tonne hydraulic crane on Monday (July 26) marking a significant milestone in a multi-million dollar project which is revitalising the Mooloolaba foreshore.
The platform and boardwalk infrastructure, constructed by Caloundra business The Jetty Specialists, will connect Alexandra Headlands to the new Mooloolaba foreshore parkland, so everyone can get closer to our beautiful beach.
The Palaszczuk Government has invested $4.5 million into the project through the $50 million Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package for South East Queensland councils to stimulate economies and support jobs.
Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt said this project helped drive the Sunshine Coast’s economic recovery from the impacts of the pandemic.

Community views sought on Mooloolah River Interchange
The community is being asked to have its say on plans for a future upgrade at the Mooloolah River Interchange on the Sunshine Coast.
Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said he welcomed the views of the local community on this important project.
“The Mooloolah River Interchange upgrade will provide key safety improvements by helping to reduce crashes at the interchange and improve travel time on the Sunshine Coast,” Minister Fletcher said.
“This project is one of many critical infrastructure projects to receive funding from the Morrison Government as part of its record $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline, which is helping to drive Australia’s world-leading economic recovery.”

Long term Aussies surf deal for Queensland recovery
The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships have been secured for Queensland with a decade-long deal set to deliver more than $100 million for the Palaszczuk Government’s Covid-19 Economic Recovery Plan.
It’s a deal with potential to drive tens of thousands of additional visitors to Queensland.
Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Tourism and Events Queensland had secured the agreement in partnership with Major Events Gold Coast (MEGC) and Sunshine Coast Council.
“This is a significant deal for Queensland’s economic recovery and locks in eight Australian Surf Life Saving Championship events between 2023 and 2032,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
