Image: Twitter via Kgopolo Mphela Redefine Properties says it welcomes the recommendations made by the CRL Rights Commission regarding the incident involving Ndebele cultural activist Thando Mahlangu and its centre manager Jose Maponyane. Mahlangu was thrust into the spotlight after he was instructed by Maponyane to leave the Boulders Shopping Centre because he was dressed “inappropriately”. Mahlangu was wearing his traditional Ndebele attire.  The company which owns the shopping centre said the recommendations are aligned with its intention to ensure recognition of the rights of all South Africans.

The CRL Commission found the cultural rights of an Ndebele activist were violated by suspended Boulders Mall manager, Jose Maponyane. Maponyane was also found to be a victim of a lost heritage, and his employer has been instructed to reinstate him. Mahlangu accepted Maponyane s public apology following proceedings. The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Commission) has found, among other things, that the actions of Jose Maponyane against Ndebele activist Thando Mahlangu at Boulders Mall constituted a violation of Mahlangu s cultural rights. In addition, the commission found that Maponyane acted out of a lack of knowledge of cultural diversity and that the suspended mall manager was also a victim of a lost heritage created by past inequalities.

Commission finds Boulders mall manager violated Mahlangu’s cultural rights, calls for suspension to be lifted Share Johannesburg – The Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Commission, along with Ndebele activist Thando Mahlangu, have called on Redefine Properties to reinstate suspended manager Jose Maponyane. This comes after the CRL Commission found on Thursday that the Boulders Shopping Centre manager had violated the cultural rights of Mahlangu in an attempt to kick him out of the mall for wearing traditional garb during an incident in March, which was captured on video and went viral. In the video, the now suspended mall manager described Mahlangu’s dress as “indecent” and requested he leave the mall.
