Panic buying has broken out across Newcastle and the Hunter region after it was announced a snap seven-day lockdown was being imposed in the area due to a fresh outbreak of Covid-19. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian approved a lockdown across the Newcastle and Hunter regions which began at 5pm on Thursday after five school students tested positive.  The local government areas that will be affected are Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens, Cessnock, Dungog, Singleton and Muswellbrook. The announcement at 11am gave residents six hours to panic buy, and social media was soon peppered with pictures of shoppers in massive queues throughout shopping centres as they raced in to pick up their groceries.
