Hyu Jin Ryu Leaves Game With Right Glute Strain

MLB Trade Rumors Blue Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu left today’s game because of a minor right glute strain, the team announced. Toronto took the contest 1-0 from the Rays, but a potential Ryu injury looms larger for the Jays’ future. Their ace threw 3 2/3 scoreless before his departure today allowing three hits, one walk, zero runs, while striking out five. After the game, Ryu appeared confident that he would be ready to make his next start, per Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star (via Twitter). Before today’s game, Ryu had done his part with a 3.00 ERA/3.22 FIP in four starts covering 24 innings. His 48.6 groundball rate is down a touch from his norm, but within range for a small sample. His strikeouts were down just a little as well to a 21.9 percent strikeout rate, while he had been particularly stingy with free passes (2.1 percent walk rate).

Jeremy Beasley acquired by Blue Jays

share-square-70903 The Blue Jays acquired right-hander Jeremy Beasley from the D-backs in exchange for cash considerations, the club announced Thursday. The move comes as the Blue Jays are dealing with a significant number of injuries to both their rotation and bullpen early in the season, which has tested their depth already. Beasley, who was recently designated for assignment by the D-backs, will report to the Blue Jays’ alternate training site. Beasley offers the Blue Jays some length. He could be used as a starter or in a bulk role out of the bullpen, which has become important for the club in April. The 25-year-old came up as a starter with the Angels prior to being dealt to the D-backs for Matt Andriese in early 2020.

Anthony Castro reflects on journey to MLB

share-square-2549009 Back in 2014, Blue Jays reliever Anthony Castro was still in Rookie ball with the Tigers, a teenager beginning his slow climb to the Major Leagues. This was the same year the Tigers drafted outfielder Derek Hill in the first round, 23rd overall, and he soon became Castro’s teammate in the Gulf Coast League. Castro and Hill hit it off and were “super close from the beginning.” During that time, Castro, who’s from Caracas, Venezuela, decided that he wanted to spend more time working on his English. Early on, grabbing a meal before or after a game played a big part in that. Hill would pull out a translator app on his iPhone and suggest hitting a restaurant. When they got there, it would be Castro’s turn on the app.
