Top Workplaces 2021: Wisconsin businesses make changes during pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic was the greatest economic disruptor in a century, causing businesses to dramatically change how they operate and how they produce goods and services.  Across the state, employees were laid off or furloughed by the thousands and businesses struggled to keep the lights on.   Among the hardest industries hit was the restaurant industry.   Saz’s State House located on State Street has been a popular spot for Milwaukee residents for the last 45 years and often caters events. The restaurant and hospitality group was recognized as a 2021 Top Workplace through a survey from Energage of its employees.   It was the fourth time the company has received the honor, and it was especially noteworthy because the employee responses were received during the pandemic.

Officials say 2019 was a record-breaking year, totaling $5.9 billion in total business sales in Milwaukee, Washington, Ozaukee and Waukesha counties. In 2020, data shows that figure dropped by more than 25 percent, to $4.395 billion. In Milwaukee County, visitor spending fell more than 39 percent to $1.33 billion, and jobs dropped 28 percent to just under 24,000.

Vendors share excitement for return of Wisconsin State Fair

SHARE WEST ALLIS, Wis.   The Wisconsin State Fair is back, which means lots of delicious food will soon be filling the fair grounds. Things at the Wisconsin State Fair grounds are currently under construction, but come summer the grounds will be filled with people after the decision to move forward with the fair this year was made this week. When vendors first heard they news they were over the moon excited to be able to come back. Long time volunteer Jerry Johnson has been a part of the New Berlin Lions Club Corn stand at the State Fair for the past 25 years. He has his usual spot he goes to serve corn.
