Avoca Park fish fry, gospel sing is Saturday

The Times-Mail AVOCA Volunteers with Avoca Park and Recreation have wasted little time this spring tackling improvements at the former state fish hatchery that is now a public park. New gravel has smoothed out the walking paths and gravel was laid on the access road to the park shelter house. The old maintenance building was gutted and converted into event space.  To celebrate those upgrades and raise funds to continue with park improvements, there will be a fish fry and gospel sing Saturday at the park. Starting at 3:30 p.m., Parker and Dena Judah will serve a fish fry meal that includes baked beans, cole slaw, hush puppies, cobbler and a drink for $8 or a sandwich and drink for $5. From 6 to 8 p.m.,  gospel performers Mark Vice, Curtis Pruett, Delbert and Kim Wray, the Christian Cavaliers and Taylor and Emily Quinley will perform in the courtyard, which is the paved area between the maintenance shed and brick building.

(AP) Maybe it was the way people look at the person with a terminal illness. The people who mean well, but their expressions turn sad when finding out the young girl before them has brain cancer. Whatever it was, it’s why Haley Jenkins laughed and smiled despite knowing her life would end too soon. Valerie Byers knew her daughter wasn’t always as happy as she projected. Jenkins was diagnosed with stage III astrocytoma in February 2011. She then developed a second tumor, a glioblastoma. Her prognosis for beating the disease was never good, but she overcame all the odds and squeezed every drop of life out of the next almost seven years before discontinuing treatments.
