Youngkin competed against entrepreneur Pete Snyder, state Sen. Amanda Chase, former Speaker of Virginia s House of Delegates Kirk Cox, former think tank leader Peter Doran, retired Army Col. Sergio de la Peña and former Roanoke City, Va., Sheriff Octavia Johnson. Last year, Youngkin retired after 25 years of working at the Carlyle Group. He previously served as the firm s co-CEO. Youngkin has campaigned on lifting coronavirus restrictions and has highlighted his Second Amendment and anti-abortion stances.

Youngkin Wins GOP Nomination For Governor (Richmond)- Glenn Youngkin will lead a Republican challenge for the governor’s seat. Ballot counting in Richmond for the GOP convention came down to Youngkin and businessman Pete Snyder yesterday. Snyder conceded on Twitter last night by sending his full support to Youngkin, who once served as CEO of The Carlyle Group. Chesterfield State Senator Amanda Chase and Colonial Heights Delegate Kirk Cox were both eliminated earlier in the counting process.

It was a remarkable win for the former CEO of the Carlyle Group, who has not run for office before and was not widely known outside of GOP political circles even six months ago. The 54 year-old Youngkin pitched himself as a pro-life and pro-gun Christian who was best-positioned to take on Democrats in the vote-rich suburbs of Washington DC, Richmond, and Hampton Roads. He argued he would bring in voters ranging from Never-Trumpers to Tea Partiers to Democrats a necessary recipe in a state where Republicans haven’t won a statewide election since 2009.
