Virginia Del. Jason S. Miyares (R-Virginia Beach) bested three other candidates in the “unassembled” convention, in which about 30,000 Republicans cast ranked-choice ballots at 39 locations across the state on Saturday. In November, he will face the winner of the Democrats’ June 8 primary. Attorney General Mark Herring (D), seeking a third term, faces a challenge for the nomination from Del. Jay Jerrauld C. “Jay” Jones (D-Norfolk).

The Progress-Index Delegates cast their ballots for the statewide Republican ticket Saturday, and now the counting of those ballots begins. All seven of the GOP candidates for governor expressed thanks to their supporters Saturday afternoon as polling places at 39 locations across Virginia shut down at 4 p.m., the first phase of an unassembled convention spread out because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The second phase of the convention begins at 1 p.m. Sunday as state Republican officials start tallying the results a process that is expected to take several days since tens of thousands of ballots were cast.
