The coronavirus crisis may be throwing some East Anglian employers off-track when it comes to keeping within new rules for overseas workers, an HR expert has warned.
Carole Burman, managing director of MAD-HR - which has offices in Ipswich, Norwich and Chelmsford - said around 70% to 80% of employers she works with has one or more overseas workers.
Employers are under a legal duty to prevent illegal working and can be slapped with a fine of up to £20k if they fail to do so, she warned.
But while her six-strong team works with existing clients to ensure that European Union (EU) employees have the proper paperwork now that the UK has left the EU, she admitted some of her new customers can be caught by surprise.
SHARE ON: While the building housing the Elliot Lake Standard has been sold, the paper continues to operate.
Managing editor Kevin McSheffrey says the buyer is Joe Issa from southern Ontario who wants to convert it into a used car dealership and auto body shop.
Originally housing its own print press, mail and newsroom, the paper will now be produced out of town, but McSheffrey will continue to write for the publication owned by Post-Media out of his own home.

A long-time newspaper in Elliot Lake will continue to produce its weekly publication, but it will no longer be housed in the building that housed it for decades.

While building has been sold, The Standard is still going strong in Elliot Lake, and has no intention of leaving the community.

After more than seven years on the real estate market in Elliot Lake, The Standard newspaper building located at 14 Hillside Drive South, has been sold. The buyer is Joe Issa, of southern Ontario. He hopes to covert the building into a used car dealership and an auto body shop.
