Apple, Google deals are transformative but come with costs, says NCCU entrepreneurial leader McKoy

WRAL TechWire conducted an interview, by email, with Dr. Henry McKoy is the Director of Entrepreneurship and a member of the faculty in the North Carolina Central University School of Business, and a self-described academic economist with a specialty in economic development.  McKoy is also a former official with the North Carolina Department of Commerce, serving as the Assistant Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Commerce for Governor Beverly Perdue. The interview has been lightly edited for clarity. What do the recent announcements from Apple and Google mean for the Triangle? CHAPEL HILL – UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Entrepreneurship (Eship) Center, an affiliated center of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, announced Tuesday that affiliated-faculty at the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) and the Duke Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative (Duke I&E) are participating with the Eship Center, Opportunity Hub (OHUB) and 100 Black Angels and Allies Fund, to create more diverse, equitable, and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems. The goal of this collaboration and engagement from multiple institutions is to address issues like DEI at a systemic organizational level, and to create more equitable ecosystems through the delivery of education, best practices, and actionable frameworks.

Destini Gilliam, founder of Creative Reading Coach LLC, received a $10,000 small-business grant through the City of Charlotte s Access to Capital program to assist business owners impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Photo: QCity Metro Destini Gilliam had big goals for her small business in 2020.  After launching Creative Reading Coach LLC, in the spring of 2018, and operating as a solopreneur for the first year and a half, she declared 2020 as the year she’d finally hire some help, so that she could focus more on growing the business.
