Randy Gerlach is president and CEO of Schofield Care, which operates a 120-bed nursing home in Kenmore.
The Schofield Residence is rated four stars by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, meaning it’s considered above average. Yet it doesn’t quite meet the new safe staffing bill’s mandate of 3.5 care hours per resident per day.
“Are they working smarter, not harder? And if they are, why are we going to penalize them, to add cost when they re already doing a very good job?” Gerlach said.
Like nursing home operators, advocates for nursing home residents also worry the bill won’t actually improve care, but for much different reasons. They say 3.5 hours isn’t enough.

The date? 1960. A young pharmacist by the name of Karl Arnold would open up a store in Corpus Christi. A store that would stand the test of time.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas â The community is mourning the loss of a longtime Corpus Christi businessman who passed away.
Karl Arnold, the man who opened Hamlin Pharmacy in 1960, died Sunday, March 7, 2021, according to family members.
In a post shared on social media, his family said, It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Karl Arnold on March 7th. He opened Hamlin Pharmacy in 1960 and was the pharmacist for 56 years until his retirement. He loved his customers and his staff and nothing made him happier than to make them laugh. He was a lifelong Corpus Christian and loved his family greatly. With his passing, it is truly an end of an era.
