A TOWN council has pledged its support to tackle speeding on the Herefordshire border, with a possibility of reducing the speed limit to 20mph. Hay-on-Wye mayor Trudy Stedman said the town council had been sent five letters and an email from Newport Street asking if it would join a campaign with Cusop Parish Council to deal with speeding traffic. Newport Street runs from the Whitney-on-Wye toll bridge, along the England-Wales border and into Hay-on-Wye near the Co-op. In the meeting on April 12, Coun Simon Morris said the letters mentioned if the town council could work with the parish council, which is across the border in Herefordshire, to try and get the speed limit for the road reduced from 30mph to 20mph.

THERE is a new promise of continued post office services in Hay-on-Wye, despite the postmaster retiring after 35 years in the role. The announcement of the post office s closure led to much concern in the border town, the local chamber of commerce said, but it has now been made fresh promises. Steve Like s family has run the post office in Hay-on-Wye for more than 60 years, but for the past five years he has unsuccessfully tried to sell the business. Wanting to take retirement, Mr Like was left with no option but to hand his notice in to the Post Office. The Post Office has said it remains committed to providing services in the town, and plans are being made to ensure there is a continuity of services.

The year started with a bang as the county suffered a series of violent storms bringing flooding and damage to a number of communities, the damage was widespread but Crickhowell, Welshpool, Ystradgynlais and Knighton were particularly hard hit. The main clean-up operations were barely over – some will take years to recover - when coronavirus hit and our world has not been the same since. Currently we are all preparing for a very different Christmas with some relaxation of restrictions but still a world-away from the usual festive celebrations. It will be difficult for many and there will be difficult decision as families decide who they will ‘bubble’ with during the Christmas period.
