202-home subdivision gets initial OK at this Oakwood location The Oakwood Planning Commission meets Monday, Feb. 15, 2021, in Oakwood. - photo by Jeff Gill
A 202-home subdivision off Falcon Parkway/Ga. 13 south of Plainview Road in Oakwood was given initial approval Monday, Feb. 15.
The 67-acre development would be between Parks Road and Warren Road, about 1 mile north of Martin Road at Interstate 985’s Exit 14.
The Oakwood Planning Commission recommended approval of Forestar Group Inc.’s request to rezone the property from single-family residential, highway business and agricultural to multi-family residential.
The request now goes before the Oakwood City Council for a final vote at a later meeting.
Two prospects, including Fortune 300 company, looking at this South Hall industrial site
A Fortune 300 company is one of two prospects for industrial space in Oakwood, needing 150 employees, according to a city document.
The unnamed company is mentioned as part of LPC Oakwood LP’s application to rezone 51 acres off W White Road off H.F. Reed Industrial Boulevard from light industrial to heavy industrial for the purpose of “distribution and manufacturing.”
The Oakwood Planning Commission voted Monday, Feb. 15, to recommend the rezoning to Oakwood City Council, which would have final say at a later meeting.
“Two recent prospects have determined that they needed (heavy industrial) zoning,” the application says. “We remain in discussions with one of those tenants, who is a Fortune 300 company.”
Gainesville approves apartments off Mundy Mill Road A 300-unit apartment complex, seen in this rendering, is proposed off Mundy Mill Road, across from the massive Mundy Mill mostly residential development in Gainesville, as part of a change in the development’s master plan.
Update, Feb. 2: A proposal to move a 300-unit apartment complex to a more noticeable location at the massive and mostly residential Mundy Mill development in Gainesville was approved.
The council OK’d changes in Mundy Mill’s master plan, most notably moving apartments from Old Oakwood Road to the more highly traveled Mundy Mill Road, across from the subdivision’s entrance at Millside Parkway.
The issue first came up in February, when the council voted to deny rezoning.
At the time, officials said the project didn’t fit the comprehensive land-use plan’s “character area,” or vision for how an area could develop. The city’s 2017 land-use plan gives a look at how different areas of the city might look in 20 years.
On Aug. 10, Oakwood City Council agreed to Detroit Lender LLC’s request to change the area, including the proposed hotel site on the land-use plan from residential to commercial, opening the door for the company to pursue the hotel.
The planning board recommended approval of the project in two votes – rezoning the property and allowing the extended-stay hotel as a special use for the property.
