Invasion of starlings saw Blackburn station platform shut

A MURMURATION was causing a real consternation at Blackburn Station in the winter of 1987. For there were so many starlings gathering around the station that British Rail bosses were forced to shut one of the platforms to passengers. Platform One was close to due the amount of droppings both on the platform and also likely to fall on to train users as the birds roosted in the station building. Specialists had to be brought in to get rid of the hundreds of birds who had decided to call the station home by employing bird scarers and making it harder for them to settle on the roof supports above the platforms. Once removed the station underwent a thorough clean.

Blackburn railway station: new roof access plans | Lancashire Telegraph

A NEW ladder and high-level walkway are set to be installed to help maintain the roof at Blackburn Railway station. Network Rail believes the system is vital to keep the Grade II liste building constructed between 1886 and 1888 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway safe and watertight. The new work is revealed in documents submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council planners as the ladder requires listed building consent. The say: This modern access system will provide safe access for future maintenance by the train operating companies and any future repairs to the roof, gutters and glazing etc. The works proposed at Blackburn Station will enable Network Rail to facilitate future safe maintenance of the roof canopy structure, ensuring the safety of both passengers and rail staff.
