Sturgeon named to Blackburn post March 8, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail Sturgeon CARLINVILLE Blackburn College has named Al Sturgeon Vice President for Diverse and Equitable Student Life and Dean of Students. This new role will provide strategic leadership for the College’s student retention planning and implementation, enhance student life programming, and oversee all aspects of residence life, student diversity and inclusion, and campus safety. Sturgeon will also serve as Title IX Coordinator. Sturgeon joins Blackburn from Lipscomb University where he served as Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students. Prior to Lipscomb, he served as Dean of Graduate Programs at Pepperdine University School of Law.

Homeless outreach worker on the struggles growing up as a black women in Blackburn

A HOMELESS outreach support worker overcame several problems to land a job where she now helps others. Tylah Pierce from Blackburn did not have an easy childhood and shocks people with her story of how she came to work at CGL Blackburn despite her struggles in the past. Mum of one, Miss Pierce, speaking of her experience ahead of International Women s Day on March 8, said: “I grew up in Blackburn in the 90s which was challenging due to poverty and as a mixed-race girl. From a young age life was hard. “I was a young teen mum, a troubled teen with a substance abuse problem.

Blackburn honors Brown FacebookTwitterEmail CARLINVILLE Blackburn College has announced that Jameela Brown, a junior majoring in creative writing, from Belleville, is the recipient of the 2020-2021 Martin Luther King Student Leadership Award. The award is presented annually to a student who exemplifies the values of diversity and inclusion at the college. The Student Life and Career Services department coordinates the nomination process and a committee of students, faculty and staff chooses the winner. As the 2020-2021 award recipient, Brown received a $100 gift card, a certificate from Blackburn President Mark Biermann, and will have her photo displayed on the MLK Legacy Wall.

Asif Khan announced as new Head of Blackburn Sixth Form

Asif Khan THE new head of Blackburn Sixth Form says he is looking forward to welcoming students to the centre in the coming year. Asif Khan will officially begin his role in May and will lead the £1m redeveloped centre due to open in September.  The college says the new, dedicated A-Level study centre will have ‘an enhanced tutorial model, work experience weeks linking in with major employers and support for parents’.  The Sixth Form centre will also have direct progression routes to Russell Group Universities, aiming to get students prepared for the Oxford University, Cambridge University, Durham University and more.
