The female calf, named Nita, was rescued from a palm oil estate in Tawau district about 20 months ago when it was just a month old.
It is believed that Nita s herd left it behind during an elephant control operation conducted by the authorities as it could not keep up with them.
At the time, Nita was found with wounds that needed treatment, and was brought to the Borneo Elephant Sanctuary in Kinabatangan.
On Friday (March 12) Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) director Augustine Tuuga said Nita seemed to be getting better, but earlier this year, was seen limping in its enclosure.
